Rome has a rich history stretching back millennia. Over the centuries, it’s been rebuilt and rebuilt (and then rebuilt again), creating layers and layers of history for the modern-day traveler to explore.
Rome is a big city with a ton of hotels to choose from. I started going to Rome in 2006 (and have even run tours there) and have stayed at more places than I can count (many of them I wish I could forget!). The city is super spread out and not all areas have good public transportation access (see here for more on Rome’s great neighborhoods).
To help you plan your visit, here are my favorite hotels:
1. Loly Boutique Hotel Roma
This boutique property is located in Trastevere, my favorite part of town. The four-star Loly Boutique Hotel Roma is super quiet and the lobby is exquisitely decorated. The sizable rooms have a lot of natural light, beautiful modern décor, and comfortable beds. All rooms also have comfy amenities like slippers, plush bathrobes, luxury toiletries, hypoallergenic bedding, a desk, and a smart TV. Bathrooms are quite large and even have bidets. Most rooms have a private balcony or patio too. Breakfast is included and includes freshly baked pastries, eggs, bacon, and pancakes. The owners and staff are really friendly and helpful too.
2. Colosseo Prestige Rooms
This hotel is located in Monti, the very oldest part of Rome. Colosseo Prestige Rooms has friendly owners and a gelato bar at the back of the building. This property is clean and new, which makes up for the fairly small (but nicely decorated) rooms. All rooms are air-conditioned, with a desk, fast and free Wi-Fi, coffee machine, fridge, minibar (in which everything is complimentary), and flat-screen TV. The bathrooms are good-sized and feature bidets too. While there’s no breakfast available at the property, there are tons of great food options nearby.
3. Eurostars Roma Aeterna
Right on the Piazza del Pigneto, the namesake of the neighborhood, this hotel used to be a pharmaceutical factory. The hotel has huge rooms decorated with minimalist but stylish décor. All rooms feature a desk, a large bathroom with a spa tub, lots of natural light, good art, and comfy beds. In the mornings, there’s a delicious breakfast buffet featuring eggs, fresh fruit, cold cuts, and pastries. There’s a decent gym on the premises and guests get a free welcome drink arrival too. It’s one of the better value hotels in the area.
4. Luxury on the River
Despite its name, this is a midrange hotel. It’s located in Prati, a quieter, less touristy area close to St Peter’s Square and the Vatican. There’s real Italian flare to the décor, and the hotel boasts a cozy lounge and library as well. The staff here are super helpful, and the rooms are quite large and airy, with beautiful parquet floors and a simple design. All rooms have lovely bathrooms with bidets and fluffy bathrobes, comfortable beds, and smart TVs. While there’s no breakfast, there is complimentary coffee available in the lobby at all times.
5. Crossing Condotti
Situated just around the corner from the famous Spanish Steps, Crossing Condotti is a small and elegant boutique hotel with an entrance off a quiet street. It has beautiful antique décor and parquet floors, and if you’re traveling with kids, you can stay in the adjacent building, which has convenient suites comprised of two connecting double bedrooms. The rooms are full of natural light, modern design, and beautiful plants that make the space a lot more homey. The beds are comfy and I love the showers here. It’s a really nice place to stay.
6. Hotel Laurentia
If you want to stay somewhere budget-friendly with a fun vibe, then San Lorenzo (which is walking distance east of the city center) is the neighborhood for you. Located in the liveliest section of the neighborhood, this hotel offers spacious rooms (ranging from singles to quadruples) with a simple but elegant look. The rooms have large bathrooms, comfy beds, desks, and flatscreen TVs. The dining area also has an interesting design, with large brick arches dividing it into somewhat separate sections for privacy while you eat. There’s nothing super fancy about this hotel but it does provide excellent value.
7. Monti Palace Hotel
This stylish hotel includes a complimentary and wholesome buffet breakfast and a rooftop bar with gorgeous views of the city. The rooms are spacious, sleek, and well lit, with a lot of wood, natural light, and a voguish modern design. The beds are really plush and the showers have great water pressure. This one of the nicer hotels in the area and it’s super near a lot of big attractions.
8. Hotel Royal Court
Offering incredible value, this four-star hotel is located on the Termini Station side of the San Lorenzo neighborhood. It has an art nouveau look, with wood flooring and period furniture, and many of the rooms have really unique furnishings. The rooms and bathrooms are large and have beautiful wallpaper, art, desks, and a good amount of natural light. The beds are comfy, the shower pressure great, and the staff friendly. I love staying here!
Rome is one of the most iconic cities in the world. I love everything about it, from the tucked away restaurants serving delicious food to the cobblestoned streets lined with millennia of history. And by staying at one of the hotels I recommended above, you’ll be to fully enjoy your trip to the Eternal City knowing you’ve got a great place to lay your head after a long day of exploring.

You can book your hostel with Hostelworld, as it has the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com, as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancelations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
